Spring Water Awareness
Each spring, we offer the Spring Water Awareness Program (SWAP) to schools in the Otonabee Region watershed. SWAP helps children recognize and understand the dangers of water in the spring. Our partnership with Ontario Power Generation makes this program possible.
Watch this video from Ontario Power Generation to learn more about how to stay safe around the water.
In the spring, melting snow and ice can cause the water in creeks, streams, rivers, and lakes to be dangerous. Stay safe and stay away from water in the spring as it can be cold, deep, and fast-flowing. Ice on lakes and ponds may also be unsafe so stay away and stay safe. Dams and culverts are dangerous at any time of the year.
Participation is free of charge, and we offer the program to classes in February, March, and April.
Presentations can be in-person or virtual for students from JK to Grade 8. Each presentation is approximately 30 minutes long and includes a digital resource package. We can register up to 9 classes a day for in-person programs. There is also an option to present to larger groups in the gym or library. Information to include in morning announcements at your school is also available.
